The Celts (Keltoi) were a nomadic people of independent, feudal tribes. They had no written language and no common ruler. Intertwined tendrils, stylised animals, knots and wheels often characterize Celtic art. These designs are by some thought to have a kind of symbolic meaning.

From the 6th Century monks in Britain was inspired from the Celtic patterns they found carved in stone, wood and jewellery when illuminating the bible. Thereby they preserved these designs as seen in the beginning letter on each page. This letter was often beautifully decorated with Celtic ornaments. Also the Vikings were inspired from Celtic designs when creating jewelleries. Thus they preserved, mixed and spread the style into the 10th Century.

Speaking of Celts as a people is doubtful and after the Romans under Augustus draw the border of their might at the Rhine and Donau Rivers in Germany, the barbarian"" Celts lost influence from 100 AD and declined long before the arrival of the Vikings.
