The history of the jewelry
The Penn Museum's collections include jewelry from Mesopotamia, where lapis, carnelian, and gold were the favored materials. This region, located between the Tigres and Euphrates rivers, is known as the "cradle of civilization" and the legendary site of the Garden of Eden.
Our necklace is modeled after an elaborate headdress discovered alongside Queen Puabi's remains in the Royal Cemetery at Ur. Composed of 20 gold leaves, two lapis and carnelian strands, and a sizable gold comb, the headdress inspired our design.
Materials: lapis, carnelian, pewter leaves with gold finish, lobster claw closure
Length: 18"
