The brooch features a Christian motif from the end of the Viking Age, depicting the battle between a "big animal" and a snake, symbolizing the eternal struggle between good and evil forces. The urn-style of the brooch is named after the Urnes stave church in Norway, where similar animal motifs can be seen on the church's wooden portal.
